How the HSP points system works
Japan's Highly Skilled Professional (HSP) track — officially 高度専門職 — uses a points-based system to grant accelerated Permanent Residency. There are three activity types: advanced academic research (イ), advanced specialized / technical (ロ), and advanced business management (ハ). Most software engineers and IT professionals apply under the technical track (ロ).
The score threshold that matters most is 80 points = PR eligible after 1 year of continuous residence. The 70-point tier unlocks the 3-year fast-track. You don't need to formally hold HSP status first — you can apply for PR directly from a standard Engineer visa if you can demonstrate retrospective eligibility. Annual salary and age interaction
For the technical and academic tracks, the minimum salary required to receive any points increases with age. The age/salary matrix from the official ISA table ②:
